What Counts as a Dental Emergency

Some problems can wait a few days, and some need attention right away. Call us as soon as possible if you have:

• Severe or worsening tooth pain that over-the-counter relief is not controlling.
• A knocked-out tooth. An adult tooth can sometimes be saved if you act within about an hour.
• A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth, especially if it hurts or has a sharp edge.
• Swelling in the gum, cheek, or face, which can signal an infection or abscess.

• Bleeding that will not stop after an injury to the mouth.

What to Do Before You Reach Us

While you arrange to be seen, a few simple steps protect the tooth and ease the pain. For a knocked-out tooth, pick it up by the crown, rinse it gently, and try to place it back in the socket; if you cannot, keep it in milk. For a broken tooth, save the pieces, rinse with warm water, and use a cold compress for swelling. For pain or an abscess, rinse with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed.
