With CEREC technology, you can walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out the same day with a permanent crown in place. No impressions sent to an outside lab, no temporary crown to babysit, no second appointment two weeks later. The whole thing happens in one visit. For busy patients, and for anyone who has dealt with a temporary crown popping off, that is a real upgrade. Here is how it works.

What CEREC actually is

CEREC stands for a system that lets a dentist design and create a crown right in the office using digital scanning and an in-house milling unit. Instead of relying on an outside dental lab to fabricate your crown over a couple of weeks, the entire process happens chairside while you wait. The technology has matured a lot, and the crowns it produces are strong, precise, and natural-looking.

The old two-visit process

It helps to remember what CEREC replaces. The traditional way to get a crown took two appointments. At the first, the tooth was prepared and a physical impression was taken, then a temporary crown was cemented on to protect the tooth. The impression went off to a lab. Two weeks or so later, you came back, the temporary was removed, and the permanent crown was fitted and cemented. In between, you had to be careful with that temporary, which sometimes loosened or fell off at the worst time.

How the same-day process goes

With CEREC, the visit flows like this. Dr. Estrada prepares the tooth, then takes a digital scan instead of a goopy impression. That scan becomes a 3D model on screen, where the crown is designed to fit your bite precisely. The design is sent to the milling unit in the office, which carves the crown from a solid ceramic block in minutes. The finished crown is then fitted, adjusted, and bonded in place. You leave with your permanent crown done.

The advantages add up

  • One appointment instead of two, which saves you a trip and time off work.
  • No temporary crown to worry about coming loose.
  • A digital scan instead of an impression tray, which most people find far more comfortable.
  • Natural-looking ceramic matched to your other teeth.

Why patients love the one-visit difference

The real draw is the time it gives back. No second appointment, no time off work twice, no temporary crown to baby for a couple of weeks. You walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out the same day with a permanent, custom crown already in place. For a fuller picture of how crowns work, see our post on what a dental crown does.

Is every tooth a candidate?

Many crowns can be done with CEREC, but not every single case is a fit, and Dr. Estrada will tell you if yours is better served another way. For the large number of patients who do qualify, the one-visit difference is hard to beat.
